The End!?

Sort of. Like with the other blog, I've been lured off to MVN. Yes, this is the announcement that I've been talking about for a little while. It's just official now: Lions Den shall be the new home of my football talk. So check me out there! I guarantee it, like Fat Bastard, will be dead sexy.

Crazy go nuts

So much for that
Like any NFLer, he's going to get sliced in a hurry along with this. Nice career move, Sean. Jeez, I remember watching the 2004 draft when he got taken. I was kind of pissed, because I was hoping he would fall to the Lions. But then, I was pissed when the Lions didn't get Kellen Winslow after him. These days, I'm not so pissed about the how picks 5, 6 and 7 went last year.

Not as bad, not as good
More idiocy from the athletes. At least he'll just get probation or something, instead of... uh, a minimum three year sentence if convicted. Still without a job, though. Nice work.

Yeah, the Jaguars better hope so
I think Fred Taylor is one of the best RB's in the league. His stats (4.6 YPC on the career when his line was only good for about half of that) and every time I see him lead me to believe this. Obviously he's injury-prone (12.2 games a season, 7 years in league), which is a drawback. Can't be that fantastic if you're not on the field, right? Despite this, I still put him up there with the likes of J. Lewis and Dillon. Not Tomlinson, he's out of this world at the moment, but still in the top tier.

By the way, Willie McGahee's going to lead the league in rushing yards this year.

Struggle within
Say hello to the 2007 Los Angeles Saints! Well, maybe not 2007. But don't expect the Saints to be in NO much longer.

Shaking around

Something else...
... to bring up whenever the Lions play the 49ers (next year, perhaps). Probably a good signing for SF, from what I could tell from seeing Johnnie play in recent years, he's still got some game left.

Character list
Hah! You know what happens when a team wants to bring in character guys. "We may not have talent... but we're lovable!". Sorry Browns fan, but the curse of Art Modell shall live on.

Slow news day
Sportsline has the McQuarters signing up as their second biggest NFL story of the day. Nice timing, guys.

On the fringe and falling
The former Phoenix:
The Cardinals' best QB's theme song could be "Where's your head at?" and their best RB's last starting job (2003) netted him a 3.5 YPC on the season. Yet they're going to make a big push for a playoff spot? Uh... okay. I know their division is total crap, but they're still not going to be that flower that grows out of a pop of dirt. If they do somehow win the worst division in the NFL, well, they'll only be there by circumstance and get steamrolled anyway. The main point stands... the Cards aren't going anywhere fast with those guys at the helm and in the backfield, Dennis Green or no Dennis Green.

2004 Superbowlers:
This one I give credit to. With everyone healthy, they should make a good push for a wild card (or division win if Vick gets hurt, which is entirely possible).

But who are the Chefs?:
The wildcard situation in the AFC (SD/Denver, Jacksonville, Pittsburgh/Baltimore, NYJ/Buffalo) is far too strong for the Chiefs to get a sniff of the playoffs. Yes, they were dominant a few years back, but they're older and banged up. Holmes may not be stable enough for an entire year, Dante Hall could fall apart at random, their D is still questionable. I just can't see them getting ready to play games after January 1st.

El Gigante:
This one's pretty easy. If Eli plays something like his brother does, they'll be a playoff team. Simple!

The Gridiron Heroes
Well, more on them in the coming months.

Why the crappy posts and lack of updates?
Again, there's that big old Piston blog. Secondly... it's a secret!

Zahir'd

This is big news, apparently
There must be absolutely nothing else to talk about in the world of the NFL. Constantly, I see things talking about how Az is shaking around, debating on what team to go to. The guy's hands are covered in butter constantly, he's lost a step since his all important third WR role on the "greatest show on turf" and the Lions just cut him. Plus he's still only 5'10. Teams are rushing to pick such a guy up? I guess they're the same type of teams that consider Clinton Portis the eleventh best player in the league. Yeah, Az is still only 28, but he's still slower, undersized, has no hands and... well, he can run routes well. That's a plus! He'll be out of the league in a year or two. He can't complain though, he's made plenty of cash off of these jokers that have hired him since his Ram days.

Chaaaaaaaaaad
This is nice to read. He's quite talented... as evidenced by his 93.7 career QB rating. The Jets should be in the playoffs again next year. Somehow I doubt they luck out past the first round again, though. More on this when I put the divisional previews up, probably starting on July 24. Nothing like a programming note for a month in advance on a blog that next to nobody reads, huh?

Le sigh
You thought I disliked Al Michaels in the NBA booth? This is similar. I would've said worse, but nobody tops NBA Al. Or goes lower. However that works. Look, I love the guy's video games (I've purchased many of them over the years) but I still really don't like the guy in the booth. I kind of hope NBC's attempt at this flops so he's stuck sans work again. But then, it doesn't need my hope anyway. If football on ABC on Monday didn't work, it's not going to work on NBC on Sunday. I bet it doesn't take too long to wind back up on ESPN... depending on how the contract is structured.

Expansion on draft thoughts
I said I liked M. Williams. Okay. I didn't go further than that, I should've. Dan Cody sounds like a great pickup for a second rounder, I'm hoping becomes kind of like Shaun Rogers... high first round talent that fell because of supposed injury trouble, then didn't get injured in the NFL and became a star. But then I'm still torn. Dude's got a damn reality show lined up already. I hate reality TV. As long as they don't reference the hell out of it when he gets put into games (unfortunately, they certainly will if it's on the right network), I can deal. Oh, that parenthesis part is true? Crap. At least his on field performance should be pretty good.

Ricky
Funny, I've talked about Ricky Henderson on here before but not Ricky Williams. From now on, when I say "Ricky", I mean the moronic pothead. I really don't like Ricky. He made a really stupid career decision (a la Tillman) but tried to come back on it, 30 pounds lighter than he was previously. Now the Dolphins have to let him back in because of the contract and the payments. Talk about jamming the organization up, huh?

Don't give me the "Barry did the same thing" line. Barry just didn't want to play anymore. Ricky was/is a drug addict. Barry paid back his bonuses. Ricky is coming back, probably with trying to screw the team out of money on his mind. Might not be the main thing, but I bet it's in there.

Bottom line is, Ricky's an asshole. I really don't like the guy, he only had one good season in the league out of his five anyway and I hope he continues to fail upon his return (especially if he's actually trying to succeed).

Rankings and such

I'm late, I know
Again, I'm sorry. I want to update this more but I've been tired as hell as of late (as mentioned on the blog that actually gets hits... 500 a day, in fact). Anyway, here's the list. As per standard with pretty much any list put out by a major site, there are a number of laughable spots.

11. Clinton Portis, RB, Redskins
Hm... guy averages 5.5 yards per carry in RB Heaven (as denoted in the recent post) and 3.8 yards per carry outside of it. Yeah, he's the eleventh best player in the league! Of course! This one makes no sense at all. I'd believe Kevin Jones was eleventh best before I'd believe Portis was eleventh best.

13. Walter Jones, T, Seahawks
It's not that I have a problem with Jones. I can't say I've seen him play much, he's probably great. But he's got an inherent flaw: He's an offensive lineman. Unless one is one of the greatest of all time, he shouldn't be anywhere near the top ten players in the league at any time. Lineman play as a unit. One by himself just can't be that high up in my mind.

47. Brian Urlacher, LB, Bears
He had 69 tackles in 2004. Okay, he was hurt last year. Players do tend to get hurt in the NFL. But slanting up to 16 games (similar to my 36 minutes for NBA players), he had 123 tackles. So that'd be five years in a row of 116+ tackles if he wasn't hurt, for an average of 126 a year. Similarly, if slanted up, he averages 6 sacks a year. 126 tackles and 6 sacks a year. And he's 27. You're telling me that's only good enough for 47th in the league? Not quite.

There are some other things I could nitpick about (Henderson, Rice, Culpepper), but those are the main ones. There's another ranking list out, more on it next post.

Hi there

Sorry, I haven't been a good NFL blogger as of late. NBA, very much so. NFL, not so much. I've been low on time as of late, what with the broadband about to return to me, the other blog moving, starting a new job and such. Once I have broadband (and thus the ability to post during the day) and get settled into the job (as in, sleeping schedule), I'll be updating this more frequently. In the mean time, time for two of my favourite spiels. Okay, one favourite and one I like but hate having to say because of the topic. Respectively...

RB Heaven
Denver! Denver is hilarious! Terrell Davis, Mike Anderson, Olandis Gary, Clinton Portis and Reuben Droughns have run for 1000+ yards in Denver in recent history. Where are they now? Davis is done for the career, Anderson is passing the douchie on the left hand side, Gary got sliced by the Lions, Portis is sucking up in Washington and Droughs, the former Lion, will be sucking it up in Cleveland next year. Who is next up for Denver? That's right, Maurice Clarett. Ex-Buckeye, ex-pariah, ex-a bunch of stuff. Clarett's going to be a machine in Denver, just like pretty much every running back who winds up as the main carrier there in recent time. Why do teams not realize this? Denver cashed out Portis for Champ Bailey, a fantastic move. Portis isn't terrible, but he's certainly not what he was in Denver's system and behind Denver's O-Line. Denver cashed out Droughns for D-Line help. Cleveland's stupid, very stupid. Soon they'll cash Clarett out and the trend will continue. I can't help but wonder when 100% of the other 31 GM's will figure this out! It really boggles the mind.

Tillman, Pat Tillman, he's the greatest guy in history!
Gah. I didn't like hearing about this a year ago, didn't like hearing about it on the anniversary... just don't like hearing about it. Yeah, it's sad that the guy died, but it's not a national tragedy. Dude had a fantastic job, gave it up for a crummy one with an extremely high death rate and... died! Some guy went into the army and got killed! Never saw that one coming! It's not that part that annoys me though. It's that he's so nationally beloved! They're so high on the guy because he gave up a multimillion dollar a year job to go in the army. Sorry, but someone who does that is classified as an idiot. I understand he wanted to fight for his country, but do it some other way! Donate cash! Don't fork over your life and job! Jeez. I hate the stupid press the topic gets and I think he was an idiot. There you go, second spiel done.

See you soon, broadband should be working later today.

I'm a liar

Okay, my coverage of the cuts will be slight... and a few days late. I figure there's enough NFL news for a decent sized post now, so here goes.

Koren Robinson and Bobby Taylor only cuts of note... both happen to be from same team
Man, the Seahawks are screwed. Alexander doesn't want to be there, they cut their best defensive player, none of the receivers have any hands... and they lost to the Rams three times last year. Ouch! On Robinson, he seemed like he had a lot of potential when he first came out, but we know what happend to him... he fell apart in a hurry. So, I say nuts to him. Try not to be an idiot next time. As for his former teammates, I suspect they plummet in the standings this year. It's not like their division is good or anything, in fact it's the worst one in the league. Looking at their schedule, I think it's quite possible they'll go about 5-11. They should pick up some cheap wins against the crappy teams in their division, but that's about it. Sorry, Seahawk fan. More on this when I put up my division by division previews in August.

Speaking of single digit picks with a lot of potential and idiocy...
People are already saying the guy is fantastic, which is funny, because every time I saw him last year he was terrible. But I digress. The story is pretty vague, but I'll relay what I heard on Fox Sports Radio the other day. The story apparently is that Taylor had parked his vehicle somewhere not very public and left it. Two people (who knew who Taylor was) came by and stole it. Apparently Taylor caught them in the act and figured out where they were going. Apparently the location wasn't far away, so Taylor got there on foot. When he got there, he started shooting up the place and the two guys called the cops. At this point Taylor took off and eventually turned himself in. This guy's already had a DUI, asked for a new contract and now this... before he's played his second year! Unbelieveable. I don't think he'll be in the league in three years.

Rice to Denver
I guess I ought to comment on this one. I really don't understand why there's so much hate to Rice like there is to Ricky Henderson in baseball. "He's hurting his legacy", et cetera... I don't buy it. Yeah, he's the best receiver to ever play the game and these days he's a #4 guy at best, but... the guy just wants to play. If an NFL team will take him, he'll play there. If not, like Ricky, I'm sure he'll get into other leagues. Just think of what a league like the AFL or my home country's league would do if he dropped down to their levels. Let the guy play. Legacy or not, he just wants to play. I say let him be. But until he gives it up, very few will do so. Oh well.

Pasquarelli previews the NFC North
I'll touch on the Vikings on a later date. I'm not particularly fond of their offseason, unlike many. But again, later date. Same with the other two. I'm more interested in what he has to say about the Lions. I think his take on them is pretty accurate, but I think he puts too much faith in Garcia. I like how he points out that Boss is going to make a return too. Good article.

Say, what did I think of the Lion draft?
I wanted the Lions to get one of the CBs at the ten spot, personally. I still believe that it's by far their biggest hole (outside of what I'm going to talk about next) and that a nice young talent would be good to stick in there. Instead, I'm left to hope that Fernando Bryant can be healthy next year and that Keroy Kennedy can make some time of difference. Despite the lack of CB, I'm not upset at all over the Williams pick like some. He gives them insurance is Rogers if still overly injured, gives them the ability to play him at WR or TE, gives them that possible super triple threat out there. Overkill? Maybe. But it'll definitely be a lot of fun to see all of those weapons out there.

What's next? What is this outside thing?
This of course, is Joey Harrington. I hate Joey. I really do. His inconsistency, passes that often don't seem like they'd hit the broad side of a barn and inability to convert in the red zone consistently piss me off. I thought that they needed to go out and get a great free agent QB to replace him if he continued to suck with this army of offensive skill position talent. They got Garcia instead. I like Garcia, but he's not what I was hoping for. Unless he magically reverts back to his "With Mariucci in SF" form, then he'll be great. But that's probably not going to happen. So we'll probably be stuck with Joey again. He still keeps his eyes glued on receivers too long, he still makes bad decisions, he's just not cut out for this level in my view. It's understandable if he's like this in year one or early in year two, but he's already completed year three. That being said, I'll still be pulling for him as hard as I can, but I just don't think it's going to happen. I hope he can turn it around now that he's got these guys around him or at least fake some talent... that is, get a QB rating of around 90 right when the team has the noted army, but still be useless to those not paying attention. I guess we'll find out in September.
